Superior Medicine

A table topped with lots of pills and syringes.

“The Superior doctor prevents sickness; the mediocre doctor attends to impending sickness; the inferior doctor treats actual sicknessâ€

What does this quote mean and how can I relate it to my own life? Today in the United States, our first line of defense against disease and symptoms is to seek immediate medical attention. This initial step of seeking non-emergency medical help often leads to a lifetime of dependency on doctors, insurance companies, and the pharmaceutical industry to sustain our lives. One of the problems with this approach is that it does not make us responsible for our own health. It leaves us dependent on others to make important choices for us that have lasting consequences. I am pretty confident that your next step after seeing the doctor will be to go to the local pharmacy to get an antibiotic/medication prescription filled. Unfortunately, this modern medical model is not working so well for us. In 2001, Americans spent $1.42 trillion dollars on healthcare and in 2014, the cost increased to $3.8 trillion dollars. This approach of disease management is NOT WORKING! As it stands now in this country:

  • 1 in every 15 people is diagnosed with asthma, a 300% increase in the last 20 years.
  • 1 in 3 adults and 1 out of 2 children will develop type II diabetes.
  • The rate of children diagnosed as obese has tripled in the past 30 years.
  • 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with an invasive form of breast cancer.
  • 1 in every 70 boys will be diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder.
  • 1 in 3 people in this country will develop cancer in their lifetime.
  • 1 in 5 people will develop an autoimmune system disorder.
  • In the last 20 years, there has been a 400% increase in food allergies.
  • 60 to 70 million Americans suffer with gastrointestinal disorders (this statistic in my view is extremely broad).
  • 1 in 5 people will develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Basically, Americans are sicker; taking more medications; are more stressed out; dying younger; suffering physically at younger ages; spending more and more of their income on medical needs; and generally not doing well. The good news is that each and every one of us has the power to reverse or lessen the medical symptoms and illnesses we face. That is how powerful a force you are in this world!! If no one ever told you this or you forgot this about yourself, I am here to remind that you are powerful beyond measure. Your presence today and tomorrow is a gift.
